Though Thira is famous for its fabulous whitewashed houses and churches that look out over the blue waters of the caldera, and for the dry striated pumice of the crater walls that rise straight up from the sea, the island is also noted for its agricultural produce.

Excellent white wine from very old rootstocks, some of them over `150 years old (the average age of vines on the island around 70 years) is among the best in the Cyclades, with both dry light wines and a rare sweeter wine named Vinsanto, made from sun-dried grapes.
